A desktop app

Desktop apps are built with Electron so one codebase covers Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A desktop app is for file system access, hardware, notifications, offline use, and an installer. Electron is the default because one codebase covers Windows, macOS, and Linux, and the interface can be shared with a web version.

If the brief is native-only, the team will say so. An existing Next.js app can often be wrapped, with desktop APIs added. Offline-first is designed in when the product needs it.

Questions

Why Electron?

One codebase for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and a UI that can be shared with a web version.

Will it work offline?

Offline use is one reason to ship a desktop app. It is designed in when the product needs it, with sync when the network returns.
